August 2014: Alaska
Patti and I had been talking about a trip to Alaska for ages, and finally got around to it this year. There was much planning, with help from Patti's friend Sandra, and reservations to be made, well ahead of time.
We flew up to Anchorage in the morning and headed over to Alamo for our rental car. Things didn't start out too well when the car exploded just a couple of miles outside the airport. (Well, maybe not exploded, but a gigantic plume of smoke spewed out the back and the engine stopped.) We pulled over to the side, got out, and scratched our heads. Almost immediately a kind soul stopped by and gave us a ride back to Alamo, where we picked up another car, which worked fine for the rest of the trip. So we started again for Denali National Park on the George Parks Highway, about a five hour drive.
