Fort Griffin State Park, in the Texas panhandle. Much of Texas just east of my route was on fire (wildfires) at the time, but I missed them, a common theme throughout my trip. The temperature was in the high 90s and the wind was blowing. The next day I drove down through the middle of Texas and stopped at Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge outside of Austin, created specifically to preserve Golden-cheeked Warbler habitat. It was the middle of the day and very hot, so I wasn't too optimistic about seeing him, but the hike through the brushy woodlands looked nice.  I saw only one bird along the trail during my hour's hike, but it turned out to be the important one, singing just above my head, and just over a rock with a painting of a Golden-cheeked Warbler on it. My birding luck was holding.
