After the boat ride, we hopped a small plane for a short flight to a remote airstrip for a bit of animal watching and drive to our first "camp". The animal drives were in large Toyota or Land Rover vehicles, with room for all of us (with Thuto "driving". Had he ever wrecked a land cruiser? "Not yet.") They had canvas roofs for rain and sun protection, although most of our drives were early in the morning or late in the afternoon. We occupants were perched out in the open, which would seem to be easy pickings, but the animals pretty much ignored us, sometimes coming right up next to the truck, as we chattered and clicked away. They seemed to feel that we were a harmless (but noisy) part of the landscape.
