Spring 1996: Texas and the Gulf Coast

A birding/camping trip down the Texas coast and inland. We started by flying into Houston, renting an Explorer, and heading for the gulf at Galveston Island State Park. The best birding there was the next morning, walking around the inland side of the island. Next drove down to Aransas, for a quick drive around and then to nearby Goose Island State Park, for two nights. We explored Aransas the next day, plenty of new and interesting birds along the Rail Trail near the headquarters, the whoopers weren't around. I walked around the trails at the state park a few times and saw all sorts of birds, particularly warblers. We next drove down the coast to Padre Island, which was much too crowded, so we stayed at Lake Corpus Christi. Then down to Bensen-Rio Grande State Park, which was just full of birds and birders. Finally up to the Edwards Plateau for our last night, at Lost Maples State Park, probably the prettiest spot on the trip, with a Black-capped Vireo to boot.
