April 2023: Utah

I abandoned Patti and Charlie at home for a quick spring trip down into Utah.  My route: through Oregon to Bruneau Dunes State Park in Idaho, about the only place open for camping this time of year.  Then to Great Basin National Park in Eastern Nevada; just opened with a few bare spots for my tent in the campground.  Next to Capitol Reef National Park in Utah; the main part was teeming with people and the campground full; I drove a long, but scenic, dirt road up to Cathedral Valley.  The next day was down through Escalante-Staircase and back up to Cedar Mesa campground in Capitol Reef.  A couple of weeks earlier I had scored the last remaining (tent) campsite at very popular Dead Horse Point State Park next to Canyonlands.  The night there was stormy and snowy, but the weather slowly cleared and I headed a bit south, where a stomach bug caught up with me in Page, Arizona.  So it was back north, with stops at Ely, Nevada, and John Day, Oregon.
